Freddy Graham directs a provincial theater company on the verge of financial ruin. The production of Shakespeare's battle of the sexes comedy "The Taming of the Shrew" as a musical is supposed to bring the longed-for success. The "unruly" Katharina is played by ex-wife Lilli Vanessi, the former star of the troupe. Complications are pre-programmed, because on and behind the stage, roles and private lives are mixed. Various amorous misunderstandings and painful difficulties ensue. Who loves whom, who gets involved with whom, who subdues, humiliates, tames? Desire cuts across all genders, and when two real gangsters show up as well, game and reality get completely mixed up. Freely inspired by the motto "Look it up in Shakespeare", a play about theater with changing identities emerges, which has been thrilling audiences with its cheeky lyrics, fast-paced music, virtuoso dance numbers and, thanks to Cole Porter's catchy songs, since its New York premiere in 1948. Peter Staatsmann stages "Kiss me Kate" at the Bockshof, the backstage comedy on the current gender debate! Now they are with us at the Monbijou Theater.
