About us

DRAUSSENSTADT - the platform for Berlin's outdoor urban culture! After a successful start in 2021, DRAUSSENSTADT is once again THE place to go for open-air culture in Berlin. The heart of our website is the comprehensive calendar of events. So far, a total of over 8,000 events have been published here, including a wide variety of interactive open-air formats from all cultural genres, from concerts, readings and theater to innovative art events, poetry slams and city tours. Well-known venues and event locations are used, but also public spaces, green areas and parks. Culture takes place outside!

This year, as in 2021 and 2022, the Kulturverwaltung announced several funding programs as part of DRAUSSENSTADT, including the "Call for Action" which was open for applications from 6th to 23th April 2023 (funds to finance public and admission-free outdoor events, overseen by the Foundation for Cultural Continuing Education). The projects recommended for funding can be found here. On 12 December 2022, the Urbane Praxis project fund (funding for public artistic projects that address urban space and urban society in Berlin) has entered its next round, the call for proposals ran until 15 January 2023. The district-based BESD funding also continues this year - to strengthen decentralized and low-threshold cultural offerings throughout the city.

In 2022, the first Kultursommerfestival took place. Kulturprojekte Berlin also organized the Kultursommerfestival in 2023 together with many partners throughout the city - once again free of charge and open air.

DRAUSSENSTADT was launched in 2021 by the Senate Department for Culture and Community and is based on the "Urban Practice" initiative of the Council for the Arts. Partners from the beginning were the Urbane Praxis project office, the Stiftung für Kulturelle Weiterbildung und Kulturberatung, the Clubcommission and Kulturprojekte Berlin.

With the help of the various funding programs, culture and participation in it continued to be possible for everyone - despite the corona-related restrictions in the area of events in 2021. In addition, the programs of the Initiative Urbane Praxis and the Berlinische Galerie were funded, as were this platform and the communication of DRAUSSENSTADT. Together with the Berlin boroughs, the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, and the Clubcommission, the 2021 Cultural Administration promoted the establishment of new cultural venues in the city. As an example of this, 13 model spaces were modernized last year as event venues, which were offered and managed by host collectives for outdoor events of the Call for Action.
